Steamboat Lighthouse The Steamboat Lighthouse, also known as the Mount Hope Lighthouse, is located on a small peninsula on the northeast side of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, United States. Built in 1909, it is a concrete structure with a square plan and an octagonal tower about high. In 2001 it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, along with a small beacon on a nearby island in the middle of the Routt County Airport. History This property was first given to the steamboat pilots at Steamboat Springs, Colorado by the Colorado Eastern Railway in 1896. It was then operated by the U.S. Lighthouse Board from 1910 until 1935. This proved to be the shortest lighthouse-keeping tenure in the history of the United States, as the Board closed it and sold it to the Colorado Central Railroad, which had a lease to run it for a short time. This land was then sold to a local bank. In the late 1920s, they built a dam to form a lake for swimming and recreation. This lake was then known as Shreve's Lake or the Country Club Lake. A large concrete and steel tower was built on the eastern shore of the lake, high. It was lit by a lamp in the tower as well as a few beacons on the shores. The tower was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2001, due to its historically unique use as a light for pilots. It is, however, missing from the register's list of sites of the National Park Service. This structure was sold in 1938 to a resort in Steamboat Springs, but the dam was destroyed by the same company's ski operations in the 1950s. The tower and its beacons were eventually removed in the 1980s. In 2001, the structure was taken over by Steamboat Springs Mayor Dick Guldstrand, who then sold it to Routt County, which was leasing it for $1 for a short time. The County sold the structure to the city in 2003 for $130,000, and the city put it on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Description The Steamboat Lighthouse is a concrete structure sitting on a small peninsula on the northeast side of Steamboat Springs. It consists of a five-sided, two-story rectangular base with a tower on top, the walls of
